The English teacher

My name is Eileen Beaumont and I am the ESOL teacher at The Peoples Center. I have worked at the Centre with Rachel Braddock ( Education and Training) for many years. I have been involved with working with the young French people since the first group arrived in 2006.

The methods of teaching English as a second language are very different from those used in the other countries. Emphasis is placed on encouraging students to understand and learn not just the English language but also Liverpool/English culture. This is acheived by providing a relaxed and informal atmosphere. When it is felt that have enought confidence in speaking English they move on to the next stage. This involves how to apply for and to find employment witin the UK.

Enought of what the People Center does for the French students, I will now writw about what they have taught and are still teaching me and others.

I have learnt from the young people that they are not one homogenous group but are made up from many different personalities. Each one of the students has impressed me with their keenness to learn, their love of life and their kindness to me and to each other. As ambassadors for their country they leave the people, not only in the People Center, but all the people they have met in Liverpool with a truly positive image of young French people.

Eilenn Beaumont.
